About

The very short version

I am on my fourth career: I write books and essays on happiness and on how to live well. In previous careers I've been a designer, a software engineer, and an entrepreneur (I founded one of Sweden's largest e-commerce companies).

The slightly longer version

I write books on well-being, happiness and on living a good life. I'm 34 years old and I live in Stockholm with my girlfriend. I hold a Master of Science degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology, where I studied 2002-2006.

As a teenager, I started the web design firm Xeniac Design together with a friend, in which I worked with design and software engineering from 1999 to 2009.

After university, I joined IBM as a software engineer, 2006-2008. I then decided to embark on my dream of starting a tech company, and left my job at IBM, sold my apartment in Stockholm Old Town, and moved out to a cheap rental apartment south of Stockholm.

After a few months, together with four friends, I started the e-commerce marketplace Fyndiq. I was the technical co-founder and CTO of Fyndiq from the inception in 2009 until 2015. The company went from an idea to one of Europe's fastest growing companies (according to Financial Times and The Next Web) and one of Sweden's largest e-commerce companies. In the autumn of 2015 I felt that I had fulfilled my personal goals with Fyndiq, which had been mostly a curiosity to see whether I could start and build a successful company. Fyndiq was now big enough and had enough talent to continue to grow without my involvement. So I set out to find my next passion.

During 2016 and 2017 I wrote my debut book Habitual Happiness: The 50 Happiness Habits That Changed My Life, which as released in June 2017. Currently I am writing a followup book, covering a different angle of how to live well. I spend considerable time writing articles for my newsletter at micaelwidell.com. When I am not researching and writing, enjoy photography and walking in nature.
